Reserve HOUSE // Residential

This two-storey home is located within a recently developed residential subdivision in Christchurch, occupying a prominent position adjacent to reserve land on two sides. The site offered a unique opportunity to engage with a more open, natural outlook while still responding to the constraints of a built-up suburban environment.

The design approach focuses on mediating this condition, creating a home that feels connected to the surrounding landscape, while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties and the street. The building form is deliberately composed, with generous roof overhangs and carefully positioned openings used to frame views and control outlook.

Sheltered outdoor spaces are integrated into the overall planning, providing protected areas for everyday living while reinforcing the connection between inside and out. These spaces act as a buffer, softening the transition between the public edge of the site and the more private interior zones.

Materiality and form work together to ground the house within its setting, allowing it to sit comfortably alongside both the subdivision context and the adjoining reserve. The result is a home that balances openness and enclosure, outward-looking where it can be, and deliberately inward-focused where privacy is required.
